An Improved Connector Design to Reduce Stroke Risk

Extracorporeal medical systems such as ECMO, dialysis, and cardiopulmonary bypass rely on tubing circuits that move blood outside the body for treatment. Connection points within these circuits can create disruptions in blood flow that increase the risk of clot formation, blood cell damage, and other complications. Healthcare providers and device manufacturers are seeking improved connector technologies that maintain smoother blood flow, enhance patient safety, and potentially reduce reliance on intensive anticoagulation protocols.

The Technology & Current Status

This blood-contacting tubing connector is designed to preserve smooth blood flow across tubing connections in extracorporeal circuits. The technology incorporates flow-optimized geometry, secure fixation, and optional vacuum-assisted sealing to minimize flow disturbances associated with conventional connectors. The design can be adapted for straight, T-shaped, or Y-shaped circuit configurations used across a variety of blood-handling systems. Intellectual property protection has been initiated through a provisional patent application.

Potential applications include ECMO, dialysis, cardiopulmonary bypass, blood-processing, and vascular access systems where safer blood flow and reduced clotting risk are critical.
