On Thursday, September 11th, we gathered to celebrate the achievements of Wisconsin’s top tech entrepreneurs at the SBIR Advance 10th Anniversary Showcase.
Hosted by the Center for Technology Commercialization (CTC), the event showcased nine standout companies that have not only secured federal SBIR awards, but also earned the competitive SBIR Advance state matching grant. These innovators are pushing boundaries in sectors ranging from biotech to advanced manufacturing, and their pitches reflected the grit, creativity, and vision that define Wisconsin’s entrepreneurial spirit.
A Program That Powers Progress
SBIR Advance isn’t just a funding mechanism – it’s often a lifeline for businesses in the “valley of death.” Over the past decade, it has evolved into a rigorous training ground for startups, guiding them through lean startup methodology, customer discovery, and milestone-driven growth. With support from WEDC and the SBA, the program helps ensure that Wisconsin’s best ideas don’t just stay on paper — they become real-world solutions.
Pitch Highlights
Each of the nine presenting companies brought something unique to the table. From AI-driven diagnostics to sustainable materials, the pitches were a testament to the diversity and depth of innovation happening across the state. Founders shared not only their technologies but also the challenges they’ve overcome and the impact they hope to make.
Community and Collaboration
The event also underscored the importance of collaboration. With representatives from Universities of Wisconsin, WEDC, and the broader startup ecosystem in attendance, it was clear that these entrepreneurs are supported by a robust network of mentors, funders, and partners.
Special thanks to Todd Strother and Rob Baranowski, the program managers who keep SBIR Advance relevant and impactful year after year. Their leadership ensures that the program continues to evolve alongside the needs of Wisconsin’s innovators.
Looking Ahead
As we reflect on the energy and ideas shared during the pitch event, one thing is clear: Wisconsin’s innovation ecosystem is thriving. The SBIR Advance program is helping build not just successful companies, but a culture of entrepreneurship that will shape the state’s future.
To all the founders who pitched — thank you for your courage, your vision, and your commitment to making a difference. We can’t wait to see what you do next.
Thank you Governor Evers for the proclamation!
