The Northwestern Mutual Data Science Institute (NMDSI) hosted Untapped AI-Next Frontiers featuring academic and corporate research leaders applying AI to emerging business and social impact spaces. Importantly, the event focused on awareness and trends in rooting out bias and pursuing ethical algorithms. Asking better questions and broadening participation on new models were two solutions towards accounting for bias in this emerging technology.
Accounting for bias is critical for businesses pursuing SBIR/STTR funding especially from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF). NIH released their 2021 Trustworthy AI (TAI) Playbook, and; NSF has partnered with several organizations including NIH to advance ethical AI. Businesses following this emerging space may find opportunities while developing products and approaches for new models formulated from better questions and data.
